Choosing the right timber for your joinery project is an important decision to make with each timber species having its own natural characteristics in terms of durability, performance and density, influencing its suitability for specific applications.
All of the timber that we use is kiln dried to reduce its moisture content to an industry standard moisture level in order to minimise any shrinkage or swelling.
Being a natural product, timber is never uniform in colour or grain pattern with variations occurring from piece to piece of the same species. If a translucent finish is applied, these differing colours and grain patterns may be emphasised and will naturally develop in colour over time with some species lightening in colour while others darken.
The timber species shown here are commonly used in the manufacturing of external joinery products including windows, doors and conservatories.

The world’s leading high technology wood, Accoya provides outstanding dimensional stability and durability that exceeds even the best tropical hardwoods.
Accoya is produced from Radiata Pine and has a consistent quality throughout with a naturally beautiful appearance, is naturally insulating and works as an insect barrier too due to the modification of the wood’s chemical structure. It is non-toxic, recyclable and its exceptional durability and dimensional stability mean that Accoya wood requires significantly less maintenance, with coatings lasting up to 3 times as long, because paints and stains stay where they belong: on the wood. Guaranteed for 50 years in all above ground applications (windows & doors etc.) and even a 25 year guarantee for items that are in contact with the ground (landscaping timbers, garden furniture etc), if it’s quality and durability you need then Accoya is the wood for you. We have been using Accoya since 2013 and regard it as our No.1 choice of timber for windows and doors due to its superior dimensional stability, extreme durability and suitability for our factory applied coatings. With the additional benefits of being naturally insulating, sustainably sourced and having very low lifecycle carbon emissions, Accoya has unsurprisingly become the most popular timber chosen by our clients for their windows and door sets. The wood used to make engineered timber is consistently graded to provide a uniform appearance and performance, supplied knot free and clear of any splits or staining.
It’s multi-layer design increases strength and also makes it up to three times more stable during changing temperatures meaning it is less likely to shrink or swell once installed and moves in a more uniform way compared to solid wood.
Wherever possible engineered timber is used for all moving components that we produce, i.e doors, window casements & window sashes, and is available in Accoya, Red Grandis, European Redwood, Sapele and European Oak.

As you might expect, hardwoods are denser than softwoods and are mainly sourced from broad-leaf deciduous trees. Because of their density they offer more resistance to the weather and therefore require less maintenance than softwood to keep in prime condition – a good choice if you’re looking for a low maintenance solution for your project.
We regularly work with Red Grandis, Sapele and European Oak hardwoods but can source any readily available hardwood to suit your preference.

Softwood is the most cost-effective choice of timber to use and our softwood windows and door frames will normally be supplied with hardwood cills. Usually sourced from coniferous trees, softwoods are not as dense as hardwoods and will require a little more maintenance but surprisingly offer better thermal efficiency.
Our most popular softwoods are European Redwood and Douglas Fir but will work with other softwood species upon request.

Here at DGM Joinery we believe we have an obligation to take care of the environment too. That’s why all our timber is sustainably sourced and complies with all the European Timber Regulation (EUTR) guidelines. We only use wood from responsible suppliers. They are part of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and they have signed up to the Responsible Purchasing Process (RPP) so we can be sure they take their part in sustainability seriously too.
When it comes to sustainability Accoya high performance modified timber is the top choice. It’s only made from abundantly available and fast-growing source species, such as Radiata pine, which helps to ensure a consistent supply and prevent deforestation of tropical forests. Its manufacturing process is non-toxic and 50% of the power used to produce it is from renewable sources too.
